Tom completed his BSc (Hons) Agricultural Science degree at the University of Aberdeen graduating in 1988 and LLB Law degree at the University of Edinburgh graduating again in 1991.
After completing his training at a commercial law firm in Edinburgh, he was admitted to the Law Society of Scotland as a solicitor (attorney) in 1994. He then went on to practice as a commercial litigation solicitor (attorney).
In 2000 he returned to the University of Edinburgh to undertake the Full-Time MBA, where he was awarded the John Macfarlane Prize for Leadership.
After graduating with his MBA in 2001, Tom spent time in the US undertaking further training in negotiation and mediation at Harvard Law School (Boston) and at Northwestern University (Chicago) before returning to the UK to found Exfacie Negotiation Consultants.
Tom then went on to complete his PhD in Law at the University of Strathclyde specifically looking at effective negotiation behaviour within the legal profession.
Since founding Exfacie, Tom has undertaken work for a variety of clients based in various countries around the world.

Tom provides negotiation, dispute resolution and legal consultancy services through Exfacie Negotiation Consultants which he founded in 2003.
University of Edinburgh Business School (Associate Lecturer)
Tom has been lecturing at the University of Edinburgh Business School since 2007 where he teaches the ‘Negotiation’ course he developed which forms part of their MBA programme.

2009 - 2017 University of Dundee School of Law (Honorary Lecturer)
In 2008 Tom was appointed as an honorary lecturer at the University of Dundee School of Law where he teaches Negotiation on the LLM in International Dispute Resolution and also on the Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
2008 - 20014 Eastern Mediterranean Mediation Association (Member)
In 2008 he co-founded EMMA which is an association of accredited mediators based in Athens, Greece with a focus on dispute resolution work within the shipping industry. The members include qualified mediators from leading UK legal firms including Clyde & Co, Norton Rose, Ince & Co and Hill Dickinson.
2007 - 2014 Mediation Scotland LLP (Partner)
Tom was a partner at Mediation Scotland LLP between 2007 and 2014 during which time he was accredited
by the Scottish Mediation Register. He resigned his partnership to concentrate on his international consultancy work and to develop his research interests.
2005 Northwestern University, Chicago
Completed the certified Mediation course prescribed by the Presiding Judge of the Law Division of Cook County in satisfaction of the requirements to become a Certified Mediator in Cook County, Illinois.
2003 Harvard University Law School, Boston
Completed ‘Advanced Negotiation for Senior Executives’ and ‘Teaching Negotiation in the Organisation’ courses offered by the Program on Negotiation run by Harvard Law School in Boston.
2002 Athens University of Economics and Business
Undertook a research project into ‘Paradoxical governance frameworks in different corporate governance traditions’ led by Professor Spyros Lioukas (Ambassador of Greece to the OECD).
2000 – 2001 University of Edinburgh Business School
Completed the full time MBA graduating near the top of the class having specialised in Strategy and International Business Negotiation. Awarded the John Macfarlane Prize for Leadership.
